Homestead Gardening Update: What's Growing in Our Garden Mid-May | WI Homestead

Spring is in full swing here at Homestead Haven, and our garden is buzzing with life! After a long Wisconsin winter, there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing green shoots and fresh leaves reaching toward the sun. We wanted to give you a little peek into what’s growing in our beds right now.


Garlic & Onions

Our garlic and onions are doing great, showing off the results of all our hard work planting them. We got the garlic in the ground last fall, and the onions were among the first crops we planted. They're loving the cool spring weather right now. The garlic is especially impressive, with strong stalks shooting up. Those vibrant green shoots are a sure sign that the plants are healthy and thriving. We're super excited for the harvest; soon, those lovely, fragrant bulbs will be ready to spice up our kitchen. The onions are also coming along nicely. Their green tops are proof that they're growing well. We're keeping an eye on them, making sure they get enough water and nutrients. We can't wait to harvest them, as fresh onions are great to have around for fall and winter.

Besides tasting great, garlic and onions are good for you, making them awesome additions to our meals and a healthy diet. We love growing and harvesting our own food. The wonderful smell of garlic and the versatility of onions will definitely boost our cooking again. We can't wait to share these homegrown goodies with family and friends.


Radishes

If you want quick results in your garden, radishes are the way to go. We've already got some plump little roots ready to pick. They are crisp and great in a salad or just sliced with butter and salt. Definitely one of our top picks for fast-growing crops if you are looking for some quick garden gratification.

Spinach

Our spinich is thriving in this mild weather, a testament to its adaptability and resilience as a leafy green. Our current temperatures are mild spring days with a few toasty warm days in there to mix it up. We’ve been diligently picking leaves from our garden, which has become a delightful routine, allowing us to enjoy the fruits of our labor in the form of fresh salads.


In salads, the crispness of freshly picked spinach leaves adds an added texture, we are grateful for their nutritional content as well. Spinach is well known for being high in iron, calcium, and vitamins A, C, and K.


Green Beans

Our green beans are just getting started, but they’re showing great promise! I went out to water them on Thursday morning and did not even see a hint of them through the dirt, but by afternoon they were peeking out at us. They are so quick! Soon enough, they’ll be loaded with pods for fresh picking—and we can’t wait. This is one of our favorite vegetables from the garden to can for our winter eating.

Basil

Though basil is a bit more sensitive to cold, we’ve given ours a cozy start, and it’s loving the recent warm days. We are a little worried about a couple of colder nights that have been forecasted coming up, but we will do what we can to keep the basil safe.


Why We Love This Season

There’s something deeply grounding about getting your hands in the soil, watching seeds sprout, and nurturing your food from start to finish. Every day in the garden brings a little more growth and a lot more gratitude. We’ll be sharing more updates as the season progresses—some preserving tips once the harvests start rolling in!
